Early morning arrival at Srinagar and check-in at the hotel/houseboat. Spend the day exploring and
sightseeing in Srinagar. Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel/houseboat.
We start after breakfast from Srinagar. The drive to Kargil is long but rewarding. We pass through Sonamarg, admiring the refreshing greenery along the way. We reach Kargil later in the evening and stay overnight at a hotel in Kargil.
Stops along the way from Srinagar to Kargil – Zoji La pass, reigning at an altitude of 3,528 meters, lies on the National Highway 1D, linking Srinagar and Leh. It is located nearly 9 km away from Sonamarg and is also the second-highest pass after
Fotu La pass on the Srinagar-Leh highway.
Drass is another beautiful place along the Srinagar-Leh highway. It is acclaimed as the second coldest place in the world, with temperatures dropping to as low as -60 degrees Celsius! Just a little ways ahead of Drass is the famous Drass War Memorial, built in the loving memory of our brave martyred in the Kargil War of 1999. This is a must-stop destination for travelers when taking the Srinagar route to Leh. Kargil is now only a 1.5 hour drive away. We stay overnight at Ule Eco Resort
in Kargil.
Post breakfast we begin our drive towards Leh, which brings some of the most incredible views! The chief attraction today is Mulbek Chamba, a 9-meter-high rock sculpture of-of Maitreya Buddha, or Future Buddha. The statue reflects a beautiful blend of esoteric symbolism and early Buddhist art.
Another attraction is Lamayuru, the first-ever Bonpo monastery in Ladakh, originally know as Young-Drung Monastery. The grounds are home to the oldest standing bolding called Seng-ge-sang, a tribute to the eminent builder-monk Rinchen Zangpo. Lamayuru is also known as the Land of Broken Moon!

After breakfast, we drive around in Leh, exploring the beauty of Shanti Stupa, Leh Palace, and Leh Market.
Shanti Stupa – – Shanti stupa was founded in 1985, sponsored by the Japanese as a symbol of world peace. It was inaugurated by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. Besides being a great monument, it offers spectacular views of the Leh city and Stok glacier.
Leh Palace – -The Leh Palace is known as ‘Lachen Palkhar’ was built by Singay Namgyal, around the beginning of 17 th century AD. The nine-story Palace is a great historical building, renovated by the Archaeological Survey of India. Leh Market is a great place for shopping and trying out the local cuisine.

After breakfast, we drive to Nubra valley. The journey from Leh to Nubra spans 39 km and passes through the iconic Khardung La Pass. At an altitude of 17,582 ft., it is one of the five highest motorable roads in the world. Shrouded in a blanket of snow, the pass affords you sweeping views of the Indus Valley, along with the seemingly endless Zanskar range in the south. To your north, behold the magnificent Saser massif in all its glory. Adorned with fluttering prayer flags, Khardung La top is arguably the most picturesque location in Ladakh.
From Khardung La, we continue the journey to Nubra valley, also known as Ldumra or the Valley of Flowers. Sitting at an altitude of approximately 10,000 ft., it is nestled in the north of Ladakh, right between the Ladakh Himalayas and the Karakoram range. Once at Nubra, we check into our camps/hotel in Hunder for the night. Take in the breathtaking views of the lush oasis villages set as a stark contrast amidst barren mountains. These villages give you a rare glimpse into the fascinating lives of the locals. A visit to a Ladakhi home can also be arranged.

After an early breakfast, we check out from the camp/hotel, and drive to Hunder, which is home to beautiful sand dunes (at 10,000 ft)! You have the opportunity to ride on a Bactrian camel (double-humped camel) here. The beautiful high-altitude desert of Hunder is bordered by lofty snow-clad peaks. Seen in isolation, you could well be amidst the sand dunes of the Thar Desert in Rajasthan! Mark the contrasting views of the Rocky Mountains that characterise the Ladakhi landscape, and the
snow-capped mountains overlooking the desert – a strange sight, indeed. A visual treat for photographers.
We continue our drive back to Leh, passing over Khardung La once again. Check into the Hotel at Leh. Spend the evening resting, or exploring the local markets, hunting for last-minute souvenirs.

After an early breakfast, we drive to the famous Pangong Lake via Chang La Pass, another one of the world’s highest motorable roads (17,586 ft.) A scenic two-hour drive brings you atop Chang La Pass, a perfect spot for photography. From Chang La Pass, we head up to Pangong, with a brief halt at Tangtse for refreshments. From Tangtse, the route to Pangong weaves through quaint villages of Changthang, and before you know it, the scintillating waters of Pangong Lake greet you. Reigning at an altitude of 13,930 ft., the alpine lake of Pangong spans about 5 – 8 km in width and 140 km in length, sharing territory with India (30%) and China (70%).
Catch the slanting rays of the sun on the bright, crystal-clear waters of the lake, which also bears beautiful reflections of the barren hills that guard it. Throughout the day, catch the shuttle change in the colours of the lake – from clear blue to dark green to turquoise, and more. The entire setting could not be more perfect. Having spent a few hours here, we head back to Leh via Chang La Pass.

In the night, a million stars in the night sky watch over the lake ( hello, astrophotography enthusiasts). Spend the night in camps near the lake. In the morning, capture the golden rays of the early morning sun on the lake. Explore the beauty of the lake to your heart’s content, and head back to Leh via Hemis Monastery route. Hemis Monastery is the largest monastic foundation of the Drukpa Kagyu Order of Tibetan Buddhism. Explore the monastery with to your heart’s content before continuing the drive back to Leh, where we check into our hotel.

Post breakfast we drive back to Kargil via the 11th-century Lamayuru Monastery, stopping briefly to explore the mesmerizing Moon Landscapes of the place (you will see why the name of this area is Moonland, as it has the same formations as visible on the moon). Lamayuru is spectacularly located along the valley plain and surrounded by mountains on all sides. We resume our drive to Kargil via Fatu La, the highest pass along the Srinagar-Leh highway. Check into our hotel in Kargil for the night.
After an early breakfast, we begin driving towards Srinagar via Drass again. Look out for the magnificent views of the Kargil War peaks Tiger Hill and Tololing Peak. Pay your respects to Vijay Samarak, dedicated to our brave who lost their lives during the Kargil War of 1999. Arrive at Srinagar by afternoon, check into the houseboat and spend the rest of the day at your
leisure.

After breakfast, we drive you to Srinagar’s domestic airport for your flight. Flyback with the sweet memories of Ladakh, both in your hearts and in your camera!
For travelling to Leh, tourists do not require any permit. However, registration is needed for all foreigners and international tourists, especially those travelling by road. Registration can be done at Drass, Rumtse and Sarchu. Those travelling by air should get their registration done at the airport.
Tourists are required to obtain a Protect Area Permit for visiting restricted areas including Tso Moriri, Tso Kar, Pangong Tso Lake, Dhahanu and Nubra Valley. One can obtain these permits through registered travel agencies. While travelling, it’s advisable to multiple copies of valid ID and permits as these are required to be submitted at the checking points.
Altitude sickness or acute mountain sickness is common when you travel to Ladakh. It’s caused by exposure to lower percentage of oxygen at high latitudes. As a general rule, rest for a day or two after every climb of 2,000ft of climb above 8000ft. This will give your body plenty of time for acclimatization. You should avoid smoking and consuming alcohol. One should carry medicines for basic medical conditions like fever, stomach ache, headache and others.
If you have plans to visit some interior areas like Turtuk, Panamik, Khaltse, Pangong, Changthang, Hunder, TsoKar and TsoMoriri etc. in Ladakh City even Indian residents need to obtain innerline permits.
Overseas travelers (with the exception of residents of Burma, Bhutan, Nepal and Pakistan) need to obtain Protected Area Permit (PAP) to visit the above places. In case of foreigners, the permit is issued only for a group with four or more foreign tourists. For foreign tourists, it is also mandatory to go through a registered travel agent in order to obtain the Permit.
Avoid using plastic bags: Both locals and tourists have a responsibility towards maintaining the environment hence, do not litter around the place. Plastics are officially banned in Ladakh and hence it is better to avoid using polythene bags
Carry proper documents: Always carry all your travel documents, permits, licenses, identity cards etc. There are lots of passes like Changla Pass, Zojila Pass, Fatula Pass and Khardungla Pass where they have a huge military presence. Make sure to make copies of all the documents and IDs and keep them safely in your bag since you may never know when you will need them
Bikers need to carry their proper documents during the trip, as they have to present their documents at the check posts while entering highland passes such as Zojila Pass, Changla Pass, Khardungla Pass and Fatula Pass. The documents should consist of a permit, driving license, vehicle registration and bike insurance documents.

Ladakh, large area of the northern and eastern Kashmir region is located in the northwestern Indian subcontinent. Ladakh covers about 45,000 square miles (117,000 square km) and contains the Ladakh Range, which is a southeastern extension of the Karakoram Range, and the upper Indus River valley. Ladakh is one of the highest regions of the world.
Monasteries: Belonging to the Tibetan Sect of Buddhism, the red hat Buddhist monks have built some of the most pristine monasteries in this harsh landscape that enthral people from the world over.
The confluence of Indus and Zanskar: Driving a few hours from Leh, you will find the point where the mighty Indus and Zanskar converge to flow into Pakistan as the Indus. Every season has the river in different hues and colours. The rivers run a deep emerald green and a bright blue that are contrasted against the stark brown mountain valleys through which they flow.
The highest motorable passes in the world: Some of the highest motorable passes in the world like the Khardung-La and the Chang-La passes that connect the pristine valleys of Nubra and Changthang to Ladakh.

April-June: From April, tourists start to migrate to Ladakh, as the cold fades and snow starts to melt gradually. The temperature during this time is still quite cold, around 5°C-7°C. By the second week of May, the very important Srinagar-Leh highway is made available again, thus opening the floodgate for the flurry of tourists to go to Ladakh.
September-October: Autumn in Ladakh is once again one of the best times to visit. Being washed by the rain over the monsoon season, the rugged surroundings turn to its freshest of colours. Moreover, the crowd from summer season thins out to quite an extent, which means Ladakh can be enjoyed bit more freely.
January to March: The famous Chadar Trek is on for adventure lovers at this time. One part of the trek involves walking over the frozen Zanskar River.
By Air: Leh Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport is the main airport of the area. This is the closest airport at Leh, which is all around associated with Delhi, Jammu, Srinagar, and a few different urban areas in India.
By Road: If you are travelling from Srinagar then you will be covering a distance of 434 kms route via Srinagar – Sonmarg – Zozi La – Drass – Kargil – Mulbek – Lamayaru – Saspol – Leh. If you are taking the route of Manali to Leh then you will be covering a distance of 490km, while enjoying the beautiful vistas of the region like, Manali – Rohtang – Gramphu – Kokhsar – Keylong – Jispa – Darcha – Zingzingbar – Baralacha La – Bharatpur – Sarchu – Gata Loops – Nakee La – Lachulung La – Pang – Tanglang La – Gya – Upshi – Karu – Leh
There are several Banks in the city of Leh now including SBI, PNB, Axis, HDFC and J&k Bank and they all have ATM facilities so it is almost impossible that you have difficulty getting cash in Leh like it happened in my case. However there are no ATMs in Nubra and towards Pangong and Tso Moriri so you will have to carry cash when you head towards these areas.
The peak summer months from mid-June to September have a pleasant temperature and therefore single T-shirts or shirts can do. In winters (from November to February), one needs to carry heavy woolen clothes and warm jackets. However, in most parts of the Leh- Ladakh region, there is a drastic fluctuation in the daily temperature. Therefore, tourists should carry woolen clothes and sweaters while packing their bags for the trip.
