Uttarakhand is located at the foothills of the Himalayan mountain ranges. The state shares borders with China (Tibet) in the north and Nepal in the east and inter-state boundaries with Himachal Pradesh in the west and northwest and Uttar Pradesh in the south.
Uttarakhand is known for its natural beauty of the Himalayas. It is often referred to as the Land of the Gods due to the many Hindu temples and pilgrimage centers like Char Dham, Haridwar, etc. Uttarakhand offers limitless opportunities for tourism and adventure.
Uttarakhand can be visited throughout the year except for the peak monsoon season in July and August. Summer is the best time to visit as the temperature is cold and the weather is pleasant. Avoid visiting in monsoon as the state receives high rainfall during this time. In winters, some parts of the state also experience snowfalls during this period making it even more picturesque and beautiful so it is also an apt time to visit.
By Air: Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun is the only operational airport plying daily commercial flights, connecting the Garhwal region by Air.
By Rail: Some of the important railway stations of Uttarakhand are Dehradun Railway Station, Haldwani Railway Station, Haridwar Railway Station, Roorkee Railway Station, and Rishikesh Railway Station. All these stations are well connected to other cities of the nation such as Delhi, Varanasi, and Lucknow.
By Road: The road is well-connected with Delhi and also significant state highways. These highways are more connected to primary tourist destinations and vital places such as Haridwar, Rishikesh and Corbett National Forest. Also, there are bus services that operate a day-to-day basis to various destinations in Uttarakhand.
ATMs are located within all main towns throughout Uttarakhand, where money can be withdrawn using a Visa or MasterCard.
Clothing depends upon the season during which you are visiting the state. The weather in Uttarakhand is quite pleasant, although at places it can get pretty hot during the summers. Hence, it is advisable to carry loose cotton clothing for the summers. But, if you are going to the hill stations like Mussoorie, Auli, etc. then don't forget to carry light woolen clothes even during the summers as it is pretty chilly in the hills, even during the summers. In winters, it gets extremely cold during the winters and almost all the hilly areas experience heavy snowfall. So, take some heavy woolen clothes with you, if you plan to visit Uttarakhand during the winter.
One can find a number of local handicrafts, wooden work, carpets, gems, jewelry, squashes, homemade jams, woolen articles, Garhwali paintings. There are markets full of unique handmade accessories and gems, woodcrafts that can be found in Mussoorie, and Nainital.
Another thing that Nainital is famous for is its wax candles, one can find some exquisitely designed candles.
