After arriving at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, transfer to your hotel. If you have arrived early, you can step out and explore the city and its local markets. The city lies at a height of 1400 m and is a gateway to Nepal.
After breakfast, get ready to explore the beautiful city of Kathmandu with a visit to the ancient Pashupatinath and Budhanilkantha temples. After you return to the hotel, transfer to the domestic airport to board your 1-hr-30-min flight to Nepalgunj to begin your journey to Kailash Manasarovar. On arrival at the Nepalgunj Airport, head to the hotel for an overnight stay.
Early morning, leave for Nepalgunj Airport and board the 50-min flight to Simikot. As weather conditions keep changing, there are often delays in the flights; hence, it is advisable to take the first available flight to Simikot. On reaching Simikot, proceed to the hotel and check in. You will spend the day getting acclimatized to the weather conditions.
After an early breakfast, leave for Simikot Airport and board a helicopter to Hilsa (25-min flying time). On reaching Hilsa, walk to the China immigration centre and complete the visa formalities. From there, walk to Sher, the Tibetan border region, crossing a swinging bridge on the way. You will next board a bus, waiting across the border, to reach Taklakot. Check in at the hotel at Taklakot. As you have reached a height of more than 4755 meters, it is important to have sufficient food and water. You can relax and spend the night at the hotel.
Enjoy breakfast and spend the day at leisure to get yourself acclimatized to the weather. Take a short trek in the afternoon to prepare for the Kailash Yatra. Spend the night at the hotel and get good rest to recharge yourself for the next day.
Post breakfast, board a bus to Lake Mansarovar. As the bus passes through scenic locales, it will make a stop at Rakshas Tal (Lake of Demons) where you can get the first glimpse of the sacred Mount Kailash. You will then head to Chiu Gompa located near Lake Mansarovar and halt at the guest house for the night. You can spend the rest of the day experiencing the beauty of Lake Manasarovar, take a dip in its holy waters, or perform rituals.
In the morning, you can take a dip in Lake Mansarovar at a suitable spot. You can also take part in puja/havan at any suitable place. Post lunch, drive to Darchen, Tarboche, Sersong, and Yam Dwar. Darchen is the starting point from where circumambulation around Kailash begins. You can pass through Yam Dwar before the trek commences. If you are not going for the circumambulation, you can get back to Darchen or the guesthouse. Those going for the circumambulation will have to continue trekking ahead on foot. You can also opt to hire a horse or yak along with a porter to continue with your trek. Take packed snacks and hot drinking water to carry along. The trek is flat and you will easily reach the Derapukh camp in 5-6 hours (12 km). On reaching Derapukh, check in at the guest house. This is the closest point from where you can get a clear view of the North face of Mount Kailash. You can retire for the day after dinner.
Get up before dawn to witness the first rays of the sun falling on Mount Kailash, creating a spectacular sight of a “Golden Kailash”. After a light breakfast, trek towards Zuthulphuk. This is a steep trek upto Dolma La Pass (5630 m) for 3-4 hours and a steep descent to Gauri Kunda. From there on, you will trek a flat valley for 2.5 hours and walk for 2-3 hours on flat land. You must carry a packed lunch and hot drinking water. On crossing the Dolma La Pass, you will able to see Gauri Kunda. After walking for some time, you will break for lunch. You need to be careful while walking downhill as the terrain is steep and rocky. You will soon reach flat trail that leads to Zuthulphuk, your destination for the night halt. Check in at the guest house or in a tent. After dinner, you can wind up for the day for much-deserved rest. Travelers who are riding on a yak/horse also need to walk for 2-3 hours on the trek downhill after Dolma La Pass.
This is the last day of the trek. After breakfast, trek for 3-4 hours before going downhill to Darchen town. From here, you will continue the drive to Taklakot and complete the course of circumambulating Lake Manasarovar, in the vehicle itself. After reaching the guest house at Taklakot, you can relax, have dinner and catch some sleep.
After an early breakfast, drive to the China-Nepal border and cross the border by walk. On completing the immigration formalities, you will reach Hilsa in Nepal. From here, you will board a helicopter to Simikot and then a connecting flight from Simikot to Kathmandu via Nepalgunj. You will halt at Kathmandu for the night.
After breakfast, transfer to the Tribhuvan International Airport to board your flight back home. Your trip will conclude here as you fly home with unforgettable memories of your Kailash Mansarovar Yatra.
It is important to take note of weather forecasts and conditions and make sure you’re physically fit and have the necessary experience.
It is always better to inform someone of your plans.
Take warm clothes and wet weather gear or clothing as per the season you are traveling. Avoid wearing sexually enticing clothes.
Use sunblock (SPF20 or higher) and sunglasses.
Do not trek alone. There have been numerous disappearances of solo trekkers in recent years.
Always hire a guide or trek with other people.
Avoid water that is not bottled or boiled. Avoid raw vegetables and pre-cut fruit as much as
possible.
Be sure to exchange back all the Nepalese currencies before you leave. They are not accepted (or even exchanged for that matter) outside of Nepal.
Most of the places in rural towns and villages don’t accept cards and there may not be an ATM available in the vicinity. Therefore, you need to make sure that you always have the local currency on you to avoid getting into any problems or complications.
Have photocopies of all your important documents (passports, flights, trekking permits) and store them separately from the originals.
Do not touch someone’s head or sit showing the bottom of your feet towards them. It is considered rude.
Support the NON-Plastic Initiative, please limit your use of plastic items, and help make Nepal a better place.
